Illiteracy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Lack of education - Essay Example The U.S. doesn't have this capacity which many have contended has prompted an extraordinary increment in the degrees of absence of education in the nation. As per a US government report, The State of Literacy in America, discharged in 1998 by the National Institute for Literacy (NIL) (refered to in Roberts, 1998), there has been a critical development in absence of education in America. ââ¬Å"Over 90 million US grown-ups, almost one out of two, are practically uneducated or close to unskilled, without the base abilities required in a cutting edge societyâ⬠(Roberts, 1998). Numerous specialists have accused this falling flat for an instructive framework that concentrates only upon a sight-based perusing program that has demonstrated to be ineffectual for most of students (Hoerl, 1997). As anyone might expect, there is an extremely high pace of lack of education among kids and youthful grown-ups in the adolescent equity framework as indicated by an investigation uncovered in the book Retarding America the Imprisonment of Potential. It has been demonstrated that these children who figure out how to peruse while detained have a strikingly lower recidivism rate than the individuals who don't. In spite of these discoveries, most of adolescent and grown-up detainment facilities, just as numerous schools and grown-up help foundations, show the sight-based understanding framework (Brunner, 1993). Verifiably, the discussion with respect to perusing training strategies have achieved passionate reactions from each one of those influenced for longer than a century. Why Johnny Canââ¬â¢t Read, composed by Rudolph Flesch in 1955, started an across the nation conversation. Flesch proposed that for all intents and purposes all perusing issues experienced by youngsters in the U.S. were caused from teachers and distributers who had prohibited together with an end goal to deny phonics guidance. Following the distribution of Learning to Read: The Great Debate (Chall, 1967), an assessment of all distributed research to date on the impacts of different ways to deal with starting

BPD Distress Tolerance Skills
BPD Distress Tolerance Skills BPD Living With BPD Print BPD Distress Tolerance Skills By Kristalyn Salters-Pedneault, PhD Kristalyn Salters-Pedneault, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and associate professor of psychology at Eastern Connecticut State University. Learn about our editorial policy Kristalyn Salters-Pedneault, PhD Updated on September 22, 2019 Tom Merton / Getty Images More in BPD Living With BPD Diagnosis Treatment Related Conditions Distress tolerance skills training is a core feature of dialectical behavior therapy for borderline personality disorder (BPD). The distress tolerance skills are meant to reduce impulsive behavior which can often result from an inability to tolerate strong emotions. What Are Distress Tolerance Skills? The distress tolerance skills are a set of tools that will help you manage intense emotional states without doing anything destructive. Be aware that these skills will not necessarily wash away the emotional pain you are feeling or even make you feel less distressed. Instead, the goal of these skills is to prevent you from doing something that will make the situation worse. These skills are best used when you are faced with a situation that you canât fixâ"there are many events in our life that we canât change, but that cause tremendous pain. In these situations, distress tolerance skills can be critically important. Why These Skills Are Important One of the most destructive symptoms of borderline personality disorder is impulsive behavior. Many people with BPD have problems with substance abuse, alcohol abuse, overspending, reckless driving, physical violence, and impulsive sex. In many cases, all of these impulsive behaviors are preceded by strong emotions. Hereâs how this works: You have a strong emotion that is triggered by some event (e.g., rejection by a loved one). You feel and believe that the emotion is intolerable (e.g., âI cannot stand this feeling.â)You engage in impulsive behaviors in order to reduce the seemingly intolerable emotion (e.g., drink alcohol). The behavior is reinforced because it works in the short term (e.g., you feel better temporarily).Once the temporary effects of the impulsive behavior have worn off, you feel worse because: (a) the thing that was causing you to feel bad in the first place hasnât gone away, and (b) now you feel shameful about the impulsive behavior and its destructive consequences. As you can see, impulsive behaviors are a pretty unhealthy way to deal with strong emotions, because while they sometimes âworkâ in the short-term (e.g., reduce distress), in the long term they actually make things worse. So, distress tolerance skills are an alternative to this cycle. These skills help you get through the emotional pain without doing anything impulsive. In the long run, these skills lead to a healthier pattern and reduce psychological distress. You are no longer engaging in destructive acts. How to Learn Distress Tolerance Skills The best way to learn the distress tolerance skills is to find a trained DPT practitioner in your area. In Dialectical Behavior Therapy, you will attend group skills training classes in which you will learn four types of skills: mindfulness skills, emotion regulation skills, distress tolerance skills, and interpersonal effectiveness skills. In addition, you will practice these skills in your day-to-day life and get support from an individual DBT therapist. DBT programs are highly effective in reducing some of the key features of borderline personality disorder. You can try a few exercises that might help you begin to work on your distress tolerance skills, including tools for accepting your emotions, the Pros and Cons Tool, mindful breathing.

Discover the Ancient Chinese Gods and Goddesses
Chinese gods and goddesses have changed over the millennia-long period we recognize as the history of China today. Scholars recognize four different types of Chinese gods, but the categories have a considerable overlap: Mythological or heavenly deitiesNature spirits, such as gods of rain, wind, trees, water bodies, mountainsDeified humans both legendary and historicalDeities specific to the three religions: Confucianism, institutional or clerical Buddhism and institutional or philosophical Taoism Some of the best-known gods have changed over time, or are shared with other groups in China or in other countries. Its not clear that god has the same meaning in western minds as it does in China since the word English speakers translate as god is shen which means closer to soul or spirit. The Eight Immortals Ba Xian or the Eight Immortals is a group of eight deities who were partly historical figures and partly legendary, and their names and attributes are figured in lucky charms. They are often depicted in vernacular novels and plays as lascivious drunkards, holy fools, and saints in disguise. Their individual names are Cao Guo-jiu, Han Xiang-zi, He Xian-gu, Lan Cai-he, Li Tie-guai, LÃ ¼ Dong-bin, Zhang Guo- lao, and Zhong-li Quan. One of the Ba Xian is LÃ ¼ Dong-bin, a historical figure who lived during the Tang Dynasty. In life, he was an itinerant religious specialist and now that he is immortal, he takes a wide variety of different shapes and forms. He is a patron god of several tradespeople from ink makers to prostitutes. Mother Goddesses Bixie Yuanjun is a Chinese goddess of childbirth, the dawn, and destiny. She is known as the First Princess of Purple and Azure Clouds, Mount Tai Mother, or Jade Maiden, and she is significantly potent in matters of pregnancy and childbirth. The Bodhisattva Guanyin or Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara or Bodhisattva Kuan-yin is a Buddhist mother goddess, who sometimes appears in a male guise. Bodhisattva is the term used in the Buddhist religion for someone who could be a Buddha and stop having to be reincarnated but has decided to stay until the rest of us are enlightened enough to make the trip. Bodhisattva Guanyin is shared by Buddhists in Japan and India. When she was incarnated as the Princess Miaoshan, she refused to be wed despite her fathers explicit order, defying a Confucian ethos. She is by far the most popular Chinese deity, worshipped by those wanting children and a patron of merchants. Heavenly Bureaucrats The Stove God (Zaojun) is a heavenly bureaucrat who watches people and is perceived as a voyeur who enjoys watching women unrobe in front of the stove, and in one story was once a gossipy old woman. In some tales, he is thought to represent foreign soldiers stationed among Chinese homes as spies. On New Years Eve, the Stove God ascends to heaven to report on the behavior of the families he oversees to the Jade Emperor, the chief god among some Chinese societies who can inflict a threat of apocalyptic violence. General Yin Chiao (or Tai Sui), is a historical hero and a Taoist god with a number of associated legends appearing as a mythical being in Chinese folklore. He is a deity most often connected with the planet Jupiter. If one plans to move, build, or disturb the ground, the fierce Tai Sui must be placated and worshipped to avert potential calamities. Historical and Legendary Figures Fa Chu Kung or the Controlling Duke was probably a historical person but now appears as legendary. He is able to stop and start rain at will, cure any illness, and can transform himself into anyone or anything. His goodwill and agreement are necessary before any petition or prayers are submitted to any other god except the Jade Emperor. He is readily identifiable with his shiny black face and body, unkempt hair and protruding eyes. He carries an unsheathed sword at his right and a red snake curls over his neck. Cheng Ho was an explorer in the 15th century CE and a eunuch from the imperial palace. Also known as San Po Kung or the Three Jewelled Eunuch, his last expedition was in 1420 and he is a patron god for Chinese sailors and junk crews.

Is College Too Expensive - 1907 Words
Is College Too Expensive? Iââ¬â¢m sure its become apparent that today a very popular topic these days is College tuition. For what seems to be ages, people did not give much attention to the cost of tuition. However, in current times theres been a dramatic change. It seems that everyday, several people are coming to the harsh realization of how high tuition has gotten over the years and they wish to see a change. In this essay, I shall attempt to cover a very serious and hard topic. One would say that because in the process of finding information for this topic, there are several articles showing examples of people attacking administrations in serious anger. Little to no information was found giving an example of college staff andâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦A trip to the counselor to hear your degree plan can add more pressure and stress to a persons life in college. Some have decided to do some research of their own to really understand and see why the cost of tuition has gone up so harshly. There are several thoughts and theories as to why college is as expensive as it has become. Both students and parents are at war with college administrators in an attempt to get more than just a weak reply of justification out of them to see exactly where all of their money is going. College students all over the country are going through the tuition struggle, and they have every right to be angry about what they have to go through. In nearly 30 years, tuition increased twice as fast as the overall cost of livingâ⬠(Larson, 63). Just in the span of 1980 and 1990, the average cost of attending public and private university increased by 109% and 146%, ridiculously. Taking another look at these figures, a direct comparison can be made comparing them to other rises that took place in separate areas during that same given time. An example being the rise in medical care costs which was 117%, the cost of new homes rose to 90%, and the price of a new automobile went up 37%; simultaneously, middle class income only grew by 73% . The few capable of affording these ridiculous prices, are usually capable to afford to ignore them. However, the rest of us struggling individuals are forced to pinch pennies and are haunted by the desire of

Islam In Indonesia Essays - Islam, Sharia, Muslim, Muhammad
Islam In Indonesia Indonesia is a archipelago situated in South-East Asia and comprises of 13 600 islands which stretch for approximately 5000km. Islam was introduced to Indonesia in the 14th century by Gujerati merchants from India. In 1478 a coalition of Muslim princes attack the remains of the Hinduism Empire expunging Hindu from the Indonesian empire. Islam has now become the dominant religion with 87% of the population adhering to Islam, 7% are Christians while the remainder are Buddhist, Catholic or Taoist. In recent years many conflicts have arisen between Muslims, Christians and Indonesia ethnic Chinese population, because of both religious and political differences. The clashes have been severe and 1000's of people from both religions have been murdered and beaten and 100's of Chinese women have been raped. Indonesia was one of the few countries where Islam did not takeover purely by an invading military force. One feature of Islam that appealed to Indonesian's is that it does not have a caste system such as the system in the Hindu religion. Before Islam was introduced, the king had the power to take a man's wife and land. The people of Indonesia were told that in Allah's eyes all men are made of the same clay. The Islam found in Indonesia is influenced by Buddhist and Hindu practises which were prevalent prior to Islam. This translates to the fact that of the 190 million Muslims living in Indonesia only 5 to 10% adhere to a relatively purist form of Islam as seen in Pakistan. 30% adhere to a Javanised version of Islam, while the remainder consider themselves as only nominal Muslims. Although a Muslim dominated population, its political and governing institutions are secular, and have little to do with Islam. Indonesia's Muslim population does not control the countries wealth. Previous governments have restricted Islam's influence by limiting the number of Muslim political parties by often forcing them to join together. It is now widely believed that the Muslim public have began to feel a new Muslim consciousness and are seeking justice. The Muslims of Indonesia, like all Muslims, believe that Allah is the one and only God and Muhammad is his prophet. Muslims believe in many holy books, but that the Koran is the most important book, recited to Muhammad over a period of 23 years. They believe that there will be a judgement day when all people will rise from their graves and stand trail for their lives. Muslims also believe that Allah has predestined events, meaning that Allah has already chosen who will go to heaven and who will go to hell. Muslims insist that all citizens must have equal rights. No individual should ever be above the law, no matter how powerful, and no one beneath the law, no matter how humble. Allah taught that it was impossible to force people to believe what they do not wont too. Therefore people should be allowed to have free minds and follow any faith they may wish to. To a Muslim, the ideal society is one in which there is justice, peace, love and compassion. Muslims believe that Allah owns the soul and he decides when an individual will die. Therefore suicide and euthanasia is rejected in a Muslim society and abortion is only allowed when the life of the mother is at stake. Birth control is allowed as long as both parties consent. Islam is also completely against people having sexual intercourse before they are married as well as anyone who commits adultery. Islam also prohibits homosexuality believing that it is dirty and unnatural The key values of Islam are faith, justice, forgiveness, compassion, mercy, sincerity, truth, generosity, humility, tolerance, modesty, chastity, patience, responsibility and courage. The behaviours that Islam abhors are hypocrisy, cheating, backbiting, suspicion, lying, pride, envy, anger, divisiveness, excess and extremism. Many of these ideas and values are forgotten by many of Indonesia's population. The Five Pillars of Faith influence a Muslims life in Indonesia; this is because the pillars demonstrate their beliefs in Islam. These pillars include; the recital of the creed, "There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet", the Salat, or prayer, which must be observed five times a day while facing the holy city of Mecca; The third pillar is known as Zakat, the payment of alms to the poor and needy. Ramadan is a period of fasting held during the ninth month of the year, it is a time when a Muslim will refrain from eating, drinking or sexual intercourse between dawn and dusk; the fifth pillar
